What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file placed at the root of a website, at the address /llms.txt. It gives a short summary of what the site is about and a list of links to its most useful pages. The idea, proposed at llmstxt.org, is to give language models a clean, readable overview instead of making them sort through menus, scripts and page layouts.

What it is not

It is worth being clear about its status. llms.txt is a proposal, not an adopted standard, and support by AI engines varies. Publishing one does not guarantee that any engine reads it or that it changes what an engine says about you. It is also different from robots.txt, which tells crawlers what they may and may not access.

What goes in the file

A typical llms.txt includes:

  • The name of the site or business as a heading.
  • A short summary of what it is and who it serves.
  • Sections of links to key pages, each with a brief note about what the page covers.

SearchDaddy publishes one at /llms.txt, summarizing what SearchDaddy does and linking to pages such as the platform and AI Share of Voice.

Where it fits in AEO

Think of llms.txt as a small, optional addition to answer engine optimization, not a replacement for it. The things that most often decide whether AI names you are a clear answer to the question being asked, sources the engine trusts that agree about you, structured data, and letting AI crawlers read your site. Our guide on how car dealerships show up in ChatGPT shows those basics in practice.

The honest way to judge any change, llms.txt included, is to measure it. Track the same questions before and after and watch your AI Share of Voice.
